ISLA MAURITIA

If you are looking for a boat trip, you can easily get confused. On almost every beach guys show pictures of their tours in order to persuade you to join them. In case you are looking for something special, extraordinary, you should consider the Isla Mauritia.

This sailing vessel was built in 1852 in Mallorca (Spain) and worked as a freighter between Europe and Africa. In 1959 she sank under mysterious circumstances but was set afloat in 1961. While restoring her, modern navigations system was installed as well as places for passenger transport. Afterwards she played roles in various adventure movie before she went for her last transoceanic trip to Mauritius. Now she is one of the oldest active sailing boats worldwide!

In the following a day-trip on the Isla Mauritia is described:

At 09:30 am you meet in Grand Baie where you are brought to the Isla Mauritia with a smaller boat. On board you get to know the crew, which is dressed like pirates. After shoes are left in a box, bags in the cabin, the captain gives a short briefing (in French and English) to explain details and history about the boat.

While leaving the bay softdrinks are offered. Soon the sails are hoist and volunteers can try to help. You will see why the crew is in such a good shape!

Danny and his friends will help you relax with some music. Their repertoire is really amazing and they play with passion!

If you are interested in details of the boat, the captain will be happy to explain it to you.

Before reaching Baie du Tombeau you can go for snorkelling and look at beautiful fish.

On the beach of Baie du Tombeau lunch is served. Creol cuisine can be enjoyed: fishcurry with potatoes as well as meat with aubergines, salad and baguette. Now you can also choose between several alcoholic drinks such as white wine, red wine, rum and beer.

The crew is not only sailing, cooking, serving, singing but also dancing! You can join them in dancing the Séga!

After 1,5 hours the Isla Mauritia will head towards Grand Baie again. On board the pirates serve coffee and cake. Just relax and enjoy the setting sun! Soon you will be in Grand Baie again and don’t want to leave the boat! (the tour ends around 5 pm)

directions: Coming from Grand Baie you turn left towards Pointe aux Canonniers/Mon Choisy. Just follow that road until you see Wojtek Diving on the left side. Just opposite you’ll find a small hut where you will get your tickets.

CATAMARAN CRUISE TO ILOT GABRIEL

Around the main island there are several small islands which can be reached by a catamaran. The northern islands are especially popular. A cruise on the Cat

Dancer is described in the following text:

At about 08:30

h you will enter the boat at the Sunset Boulevard in Grand Baie. You will have to take off your shoes because on board everybody is barefoot. First the catamaran will use its engines to leave the bay but on open sea the sails are hoist.

Don’t underestimate the swell! If you are a person with a weak stomach, you might consider another cruise.

If your stomach is fine you will enjoy the good shaking of the waves. If you are lucky you might even see whales! That is more likely in winter whereas in summer dolphins can be watched.

During the 1,5 – 2h cruise the crew will serve you with soft drinks.  In the worst case they will hand you plastic bags as well.

From quite a distance you can already make out Coin de Mire, Ile Plate, Ilot Gabriel, later also Ile Ronde and Ile aux Serpents. After reaching Ilot Gabriel, you are brought to the island by a small boat. There you can enjoy the beautiful beach and tan under the bamboo sunshade (lounges for rent 100Rs/day). Nevertheless you should use the opportunity to take a walk because the nature and the view are really impressive.

Of course there will be some Séga and as soon as the crew gets the guitar you’ll have the perfect island-feeling 🙂

After about 2 hours you return to the Cat Dancer where you’ll have delicious lunch – consisting of BBQ with fish, sausages and chicken with noodle salad, rice and different vegetables. Additionally to the soft drinks you can choose between rum, whine and beer. Food is served in the inner area as well as in the roofed area of the catamaran. The crew is taking good care of their passengers and answers all sorts of questions.

Fortified by the BBQ you head back to the main island. There is also a professional photographer who takes pictures which can be purchased on CD afterwards.

Around 16:00h the Cat Dancer reaches Grand Baie and you will have to say Good-Bye.

For those who want to spend more time on the Cat Dancer there is a possibility to charter the catamaran for some days (the Cat Dancer offers 4 cabins). Those private tours will be designed according to your wishes.

After the delicious BBQ, the Sunset Cruiser will anchor near the „Crystal rock“ in the lagoon next to the Benitiers Island. Again you will have the possibility to snorkel and feed the small fish or just enjoy the sun. Ultimately the pirogue will take you  to the island for a walk along the beach.
Back on board at about 15:30 you will savour the last ray of sunshine on your skin until finally the Suncruiser will reach the dry land where the minibus will be waiting for you!
If you have a foible for Sega music than book the Sunset Cruiser with or without Dinner!
Baba Cool Co Ltd. will take you out of the bay and along the coast as the sun starts to set. With Sega music in the background, a homemade punch in hand and, a variety of local snacks you will enjoy a miraculous event inside the lagoon where the party starts with creole and european music by musicians.
The party will continue until 22h!

ILE AUX BÉNITIERS

The Ile aux Bénitiers is a large coral sand island in the lagoon of the south western part of Mauritius. The island is approximately 500 meters long and almost the entire coast is covered with a beautiful white sandy beach. The water of the huge surrounded lagoon is crystal clear and shallow and has many coral fields which make snorkelling very interesting. The centre of the island is covered with vegetation which gives it a bright green colour. Among others there is a huge coconut plantation in the centre of the Ile aux Bénitiers. The fauna is not very varied but some interesting birds can be seen on Ile aux Bénitiers. One can say that this island is a nice place for an excursion especially because of its beaches and the untouched nature in the central part.
To visiting Ile aux Bénitier many companies provide different kind of boot trips. The trip can be done either on a catamaran or on a speedboat. A trip to Ile aux Bénitiers is one of the excursions which you should do during your stay in Mauritius.

Please be careful with the company you book the trip with. There are some companies which provide very cheap trips with the result that the guest end up on an overcrowded old boot. The price for a qualitative trip starts at 1600 Rupees.

A daytrip with Dream Team to the Ile aux Bénitiers

The trip will start in the morning between 7.30 and 8.30. The Dream Team will pick you up with one of their three luxurious speedboats either in Le Morne, in Tamarn or in Black River. First of all you will go to a spot around the west coast where you can watch dolphins which are coming close to the coast for hunting every morning. Two different species of dolphins, the Bottom Nose and the Spinners can be seen here. If you are lucky and the sea is calm you can even go into the water and swim with them.

The next stop will be the crystal rock which is located just in front of the Ile aux Bénitiers. Here you will have some time to snorkel and to experience the awsome underwater world. After snorkelling you will finally reach the island where the Dream Team will start to prepare your barbeque while you get a rest to explore the island, relax on the beach or to let the party start.

For lunch the team will serve you a delicious barbeque with a variety of fish, chicken, sausages, salad, bread and on request even lobster and whatever your wishes are. Soft drinks and alcoholic drinks will also be served during the entire trip.
After the big lunch you will get some more time to enjoy the island or the boys of Dream Team will give you an unforgettable live sega concert on the beach.

Around afternoon you will have to leave the Ile aux Bénitiers. Before you finally will reach the mainland again around 4.00 pm you will get some more time for snorkelling or to try yourself in fishing.
